Cobb parents upset by school board member’s social media post

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Cobb County parents got a little worked up over a school board member’s recent social media post.

Cobb County Schools is one of the metro Atlanta school districts that will be going virtual for the start of school in the fall.

The virtual plan has the support of some parents and disapproval of others, making this a challenging issue.

Dr. Jaha Howard, a Cobb County School District board member, made a Facebook post that put him in the middle of this hotly debated issue.

In Howard’s post, he referred to the parents who support the schools reopening as the “you better open or else” parents.

The post drew thousands of reactions and hundreds of comments from parents all over the district.

“If you see a pediatric dentist show up Saturday in scrubs and PPE, it’s me. I’ll be there to protest your protest. Also, I fixed your flyer. You’re welcome,” Howard wrote in the post.

Channel 2′s Chris Jose, spoke with Cobb County parent Michael Shelly and supporter of in class learning.

Shelly is the parent who started the petition to reinstate in class learning at Cobb County Schools. Shelly took offense with Howard’s post.

“Well it was very disturbing. It was very sarcastic, and it was mocking,” Shelly said.

Howard and Shelly have a difference of opinion as to how the school year should begin, but both are in support of children getting back to learning.
