Adult care home owner testifies at sentencing hearing

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The owner of A Top of the Line Adult Care Home, Edith Page, took the stand and admitted she tied a patient to a bed with belts.

She said the belts were the mentally disabled patient's idea and said the patient put the diaper on before she restrained him.

"In hindsight, would I have done things differently? Absolutely your honor," Page said.

Page said it all started when patient Arthur Hayes had a violent tantrum in January 2013.

Page testified she didn't call police because she knew Hayes would go to jail.

According to Page, Hayes begged her not to call 911, and he volunteered to be tied up as an alternative to going to jail.

"Again, I feel stupid for accepting to even listen to him and I did that," Page said. "When he went to sleep, I took the restraints off and he went to bed, we all went to bed."

Hayes told the judge he remembered punching a staff member but could barely remember anything else.

Page has given up all her licenses; she said she has no intention of opening another home.

Page also offered an apology to Hayes.

"We made a choice to save him from being incarcerated, and now we ourselves are looking at the very thing we were trying to save him from," Page said.

Her husband, Osvaldo Hernandes, and two workers took plea deals.
