3 Cobb facilities, including senior centers damaged after pipes burst during Christmas weekend

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Record temperatures during the Christmas weekend caused pipes to burst inside of homes, schools and businesses across Georgia.

The property maintenance manager for Cobb County says three out of 115 county facilities experienced some damage after pipes burst.

“We’re very fortunate only three were deeply impacted. We did a lot of prepping before the cold weather arrived,” said Larry Haney, who is the Property Maintenance Manager for Cobb County.

The West Cobb Senior Center reopened on Wednesday after being closed since the holidays. It will take a little longer for The Freeman Poole Senior Center to reopen.

“We’re just trying to get the building dried out from the damage that occurred last weekend due to the unsuitable cold temps here in Georgia. We had a sprinkler pipe that had busted on one side of the building then another which caused damaged. A lot of water damage, ceiling damage flooring and dry wall damage,” said Haney.

Haney anticipates the Freeman Poole Senior Center to reopen mid-April.

Vinings Library is set to reopen towards the end of January. According to the county website, all holds that were available for pickup have moved to the Lewis A Ray Branch library. Patrons placing holds at Vinings will be automatically re-routed to go to the Lewis A. Ray Branch Library, until Vinings Library reopens. Book drops at Vinings Library are closed, so patrons cannot return books there.

Cobb County crews have been able to complete a bulk of the work at each county building on their own, but the Freeman Poole Senior Center will require additional help because the damage is extensive.

Haney takes pride in the crew he works with and the hard work they’ve put in since addressing the initial problem Christmas weekend.

“It was very difficult considering the weekend being Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and having people away from their families. They came in with a smiling face they take pride in the work they do,” said Haney.
