CLARKE COUNTY, Ga. — Clarke County School District Superintendent Dr. Xernona Thomas has announced she is temporarily stepping down for a medical leave.
Thomas announced Monday that she began a medical leave on January 6. She says she is expecting to be away from day-to-day operations of the district for five to seven weeks.

Chief Academic Officer Brannon Gaskins will serve as Acting Superintendent.
“While it is difficult to step away from CCSD, however briefly, I know it is in the best interest to concentrate on my health. I have complete confidence in Mr. Gaskins and my administrative team to continue to focus on our strategic priorities and do what’s best for our students. I am committed to returning to the school district as soon as possible,” Thomas said in a letter to the CCSD community.
Thomas has not elaborated further on what prompted the medical leave.

In November, Thomas announced that she would be retiring later this year. She plans to end her 31 years in public education on December 31, 2022.
