Cherokee High School closed Friday due to water main break

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Classes are canceled at Cherokee High School after a water main break Friday morning.

The superintendent said the break has affected several other schools and city officials do not expect a quick repair.

School officials say the campus is too large to cover with replacement systems, making it unsafe for students and staff.

Students already on campus can eat breakfast, but buses will be returning students home as quickly as possible, officials say.

The school says there will not be online instruction since teachers and staff also cannot work on campus.

The City of Canton said the break happened on a 10″ line from the Bobby Bishop Water Treatment Plant in an area behind the Riverview Cemetery downtown.

The break created water loss in the following areas: downtown Canton, Hasty Elementary School, Brown Industrial Park, South Canton, Marietta Highway, Cherokee High School, Pointe at Puckett Creek, Whispering Woods, and the areas fed by the Ridge Pine Storage Tank.

Additionally, there are areas of lower pressure system-wide.

Crews were able to isolate the break and are currently working to re-route and operate a pumping plan to bring water back into the system and begin refilling tanks.
