CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — A lawsuit filed against the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has been dismissed after the GBI found that it was “unsubstantiated.”
According to the lawsuit filed in July, a female inmate claimed that a deputy had “violently raped” her in October 2020 in a part of the Adult Detention Center that was under construction and did not have active surveillance cameras. She says he then threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
The lawsuit alleged that it was well-known among inmates that young, female inmates would be invited to join work programs in the jail and were later sexually assaulted.

Prior to the rape, the woman reported that the same deputy groped her and rubbed against her.
The former inmate did not report the allegations to law enforcement or the District Attorney’s office.
After the lawsuit was filed, Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation. They found that the allegations in the lawsuit were “unsubstantiated.”

“The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency and we hold the highest standards of care for our inmate population,” said Sheriff Reynolds. “We believe this case was without merit and we are pleased with the court’s ruling.” “We would also like to thank the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for thoroughly investigating the allegations.”
After the investigation, the woman’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, and a federal judge accepted the motion.
