2 children accused of starting fire

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Two young children are accused of starting a fire that scorched an Acworth neighborhood on Friday.

The fire started around 2:30 p.m. at a townhome community on Oak Leaf Place and damaged 17 homes.

Trees and grass were burned, and siding and fences were melted and charred.

“It’s going to be a long time before we can go back home,” neighbor Kelli Roach said.

Investigators are looking into claims that two children, one of them a 5-year-old, started the fire.

“You don’t want them in trouble, but you want them to learn for what they’ve done, you know?” neighbor Christina Goss said.

“What are you going to do to a 5-year-old? They don’t understand. The parents need to have something done,” Roach said.

The children’s parents declined to comment on the incident.

A family friend told Channel 2’s Nicole Carr that the kids are shaken up and the family is aware of everyone’s feelings, so they did not want to speak at this time.
