Car fire spreads to Decatur townhouse

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A possible car fire caused flames to spread through a DeKalb county townhome Sunday night.

It happened in the Leafmore Forest community along LaVista Road. Just shy of 6 p.m. Sunday, neighbors realized something was wrong.

"Huge band of smoke. A  beautiful orange color. And we kept looking and realized---holy cow! We think something's on fire,” neighbor Jennifer Garlow said.

"We could hear glass blowing out. It was a pretty big flame, and there was a bunch of smoke coming out,” neighbor Kiernan Acklin said.

The smoke was  coming from the garage, where firefighters believe it started.

"The wife came home from the grocery store is what her husband said, and opened the garage door, she saw smoke and flames inside her garage," Battalion Chief Kenneth McKinney told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen.

"Everything in the garage is a total loss. Including the car and all contents in the garage," he said.

No one was injured, fire crews said. Quick work by firefighters, and the fire walls stopped the flames from spreading.

"It scared me at first. But we asked them if anyone was inside, and they said at the time nobody was there, and everyone was safe--whoever lived there,” Acklin said.
