Boy struck by lightning released from hospital

HENRY COUNTY, Ga — A 7-year-old boy says an angel helped keep him safe after he was hit by lightning.

Sebastian Cedeno was released from Grady Memorial Hospital after a two-night stay in the burn unit.

After he was released he went to his grandmother's house in Stockbridge. That's where he talked to Channel 2’s Tom Jones.

"The angel was looking over me," he said.

The Rock Springs Elementary soon-to-be second-grader was hit by lightning in his home in Ola in Henry County Wednesday night.

"All I remember, I was standing with my mom and I got shocked," he said.

Sebastian suffered first-degree burns in his groin area, on his leg and arm. One of the socks Sebastian had on when he was hit by lightning was burned and had a hole in it. He didn’t suffer any injuries to his foot.

Sebastian’s mother, Kara Rivers, is still baffled at how he could be hit while standing in his home.

"My first thought was like, ‘What the heck happened?’  And then I saw his socks steaming and I was like, ‘There's no way. There's no way he could have gotten struck. We're inside the house,’" she said.

Rivers says she and her son were standing near the window at their home when a wicked storm blew through.

"The bolt came somewhere and all we heard is kaboom," she said.

That's when Sebastian went flying a few feet across the kitchen and her ears started ringing. She says it's a miracle her son wasn't seriously hurt.

Rivers says she plans to make a few changes after this.

"Be more cautious of windows and thunderstorms," she told Jones.

Sebastian is happy to be out of the hospital. He couldn't wait to hit the pool when he got to his grandmother's house.

Sebastian said it was hard being in the hospital because he had to have to intravenous fluids, but he says he feels fine now and is ready to put this all behind him.

Meanwhile, his parents said the lightning severely damaged their home and they don't know when they will return.
