DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Police are still searching for a motive after a woman was found shot and killed behind an office building in downtown Decatur.
It happened on the corner of East Ponce de Leon and Church streets just before 11 p.m. on Saturday.
Police have identified the victim as Karen Pearce, 44.
Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes learned Monday that the woman was a hairstylist at True Hair Salon & Spa in Marietta.
A police report says that Pearce left a restaurant in the downtown Decatur area and shortly after, witnesses reported hearing a gunshot.
A witness was leaving a parking deck when they noticed the body.
“I work in Decatur a lot, at the hospital and no, I feel safe here, so it’s unusual. I wouldn't suspect that,” Scott Hall, who works nearby, said.
Decatur police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are treating the case as a murder because it appears the woman was shot to death.
Fernandes spoke with other people who work in the area who said downtown Decatur isn't a crime free area, but it's not a place they'd expect to see a woman's body left in the middle of the street.
It's unclear if the woman was actually killed there, or just left there.
Staffers at True Salon placed a notice on their door as well as their Facebook page that said:
"It is with profound sadness that we can confirm Karen Pearce, a talented and popular stylist at true Salon/Spa, was killed Saturday evening. While we are all in shock and grasping to understand how something so tragic could happen to a woman with such a beautiful heart, we must believe justice will prevail."
