Basketball star Kevin Ware to travel with team to Atlanta after injury

ATLANTA — After a horrific injury, Rockdale County native and college basketball star Kevin Ware plans to travel to Atlanta with his team for this weekend's game and sit on the sidelines.

The University of Louisville sophomore suffered one of the worst bone breaks in sports history during the game against Duke University on Sunday night. Channel 2's Liz Artz spoke to Ware over the phone from his Indianapolis hospital room Monday. He said that he was in shock when he saw his broken leg and didn't feel any pain.

He told Artz that the injury brought his team together. He said he told them it was not about him, but about the team, and encouraged them to win.

Artz also talked to his sister, Brittney Ware. She was watching her brother take on Duke in the Elite Eight when the injury occurred. She said she was thinking, "Oh my God, that's my brother."

Like millions of others, she said she just started praying for him.

Within minutes of the gruesome injury, there were several Facebook pages in support of Ware. One page, Prayers for Kevin Ware, has nearly 200,000 likes and is keeping the world updated on his condition.

Ware said he's aware of the tweets from former football legend Joe Theismann, who had an equally gruesome break in the mid-1980s. Ware said he plans to contact Theismann for advice.

Meanwhile, the college basketball star is focused on his road to recovery. Ware said he's taking his time instead of trying to rush it.
