AutoNation takes steps to keep recalled cars off road

ATLANTA — The country's largest car dealer is issuing "stop sale" orders on all vehicles with open recalls.

AutoNation sells more than 2,000 new and used cars in Metro Atlanta monthly.

Chairman Mike Jackson told a trade publication the recall system is a "dysfunctional nightmare."

"With families driving their kids, putting lots of commute miles on the car everyday, safety is one of the number one issues when they purchase a vehicle today," said Williams.

"We will not sell it until that recall's been performed; This includes all recalls on every brand.  We won't wholesale, retail, lease or trade a vehicle that has an open recall on it."

Some recalled cars must wait for parts, meaning at any one time, thousands of cars will sit idle at 237 AutoNation stores in 15 states.

"We're going to be looking at 5 to 10  percent of our inventory at any given time being tied up until the recalls can be performed," said Williams.

"It helps me trust my dealership; It helps me be assured that the car that I'm buying is not going to be damaged or defective; It gives me a great deal of confidence," said customer Tyler Hickerson about the policy.

AutoNation says its will not devalue trades if it has an open recall and won't even check until they take possession of the car.
