ATLANTA — A lawyer for former Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall said Tuesday she has stage 4 breast cancer and he's worried about her ability to go through trial.
Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne talked to a breast cancer expert from the Winship Cancer Institute about what it means for Hall's condition.
"Stage 4 breast cancer is when the cancer has spread outside the breast to other parts of the body and its considered incurable but treatable," said Dr. Amelia Zelnak with the Winship Cancer Institute.
Hall's legal case and medical case may be at an intersection. According to a court official, Hall is one 13 defendants standing by their not-guilty pleas in the APS racketeering case.
"Dr. Hall is not here ... she had a medical episode over the weekend and had to be admitted," said attorney Richard Deane during Tuesday's court hearing.
After the hearing, Deane said Hall was seriously ill with stage 4 breast cancer.
He indicated she was hospitalized Saturday and released Sunday, and he worries about her being able to go through a trial.
Deane said Hall was meeting with her oncologist Tuesday morning.
Superior Court Judge Jerry Baxter said jury selection for the lengthy trial will begin April 28. Jury selection could take weeks, even months, to complete, the judge said.
