Smyrna police lieutenant to spend Christmas at home after heart attack

COBB COUNTY, Ga — A local lieutenant will spend Christmas at home this year-- nearly a year after a heart attack sent him to the hospital.

Channel 2’s Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell spoke with him and learned his message to everyone watching.

“I was determined to walk again, that was all I thought about,” Lt. Ed Cason of the Smyrna Police Department said. “I wanted to be able to come to work and finish out my career.”

As Lt. Ed Cason walks through the police department he’s invested 24 years into, He’s reminded of what it took to get this far.

“I tried to stand up, I couldn’t stand up, so when I finally got to my feet, I just collapsed and then my whole right side was paralyzed,” Cason said.

It was almost year ago, but Cason still remembers every detail. It was five days before Christmas.

“I spent Christmas and New Years in the hospital,” Cason said.

It took months before Cason could fully walk again.

This isn’t his first health scare. Cason said it was his third heart attack.

Cason finished rehab in October.

He received a warm welcome and special honors from his colleagues at the Smyrna Police Department.

And as Christmas quickly approaches, Cason is reminded of how far his determination has brought him.

“It’s going to be really special, I’m really thankful. My wife and I talked about it the other day, it’s coming up on that one year, I said well I’ll be home this time for Christmas so it’s going to be good,” Cason said.
