Senior battling brain cancer gets special graduation ceremony at Atlanta hospital

ATLANTA — A Georgia high school graduate who is battling cancer got a very special graduation after missing her school’s graduation during treatments.

Brooke Taylor, 18, goes to Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton. She was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer last November.

She’s endured months of treatment over the course of her senior year and was an inpatient at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta for part of the year.

Brooke worked hard to keep up with her schoolwork while battling cancer so that she could graduate on time. She even graduated with honors. But she was admitted back to Scottish Rite, missing both her high school’s honor night and her graduation ceremony.

“Brooke’s hospital teachers wanted to do something special to recognize her accomplishments,” Children’s wrote on a Facebook post.

Last week, Brooke walked out of her chemotherapy appointment to the celebration she deserved.

“She walked into a surprise graduation ceremony, receiving cheers from her biggest supporters—her mom, principals, teachers, nurses, social workers and child life specialists,” Children’s wrote.

Her principal, Denise Pendley and assistant principal, Mark Lentych even made a special trip to Atlanta to present Brooke with her diploma.
