Mother says school didn't tell her about bus crash

ATLANTA — A mother said her son’s school bus crashed and the school never told her about it.

Alton Mitchell, 9, said he was asleep on his school bus Friday when he heard a loud noise and realized his bus had hit a pole.

“My heart was beating fast,” Alton said.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene on Howell Drive. Alton said he felt OK and was taken to school at Peyton Forest Elementary School.

Alton’s mother is livid because she said no one from the school called to tell her about the crash.

“I should have been contacted immediately, like, it’s no excuse,” Shandrea Isom said.

Atlanta Public Schools spokesperson Taylor Jones said the bus was in a minor accident. Paramedics evaluated one student and cleared him of injuries. Isom took her child to the doctor and was told he had bumps and bruises.

She said she still hasn’t heard from school officials.

“Say, ‘Hey, we’re sorry. This is what happened on Friday,’” Isom said.

Channel 2’s Tom Jones asked APS officials if anyone contacted the mother at the time of the crash, and if they didn’t, then why not. He did not get a response.

Taylor Jones said a transportation official has been in contact with Isom, but the mother said she has not heard from anyone.
