Is winning the lottery worth missing your flight? Atlanta Airport passengers weigh in

ATLANTA — Near the North Baggage Claim in the world’s busiest airport, travelers are in line. And it’s not for TSA.

Instead, travelers are pushing to win big as the Mega Millions jackpot hits historic highs.

The Georgia Lottery has kiosks at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which often sell more tickets than any other shop or store in the entire state.

Speaking with Channel 2 Action News, travelers at the gates said delays at the airport might mean winning the jackpot.

“I’m picking the gate, the gate changes, and the time changes for some of my numbers,” Chris Winters told Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen. Winters was a little upset that his flight had been delayed. “So now because of that luckiness, I’m going to win!”

He’s one of many trying to win Mega Millions, even while traveling across the country. The jackpot has now topped the game’s all-time record.

The prize? $1.58 billion. With a B.

Ernie and Cathy Lopez were flying back to New York City. If they’re a little late getting to the gate, they had good reasons for it.

The couple had a flight to catch Tuesday, but there was a change of plans.

“As soon as we got down this way it became our itinerary,” Ernie Lopez said. He was talking about the lottery kiosks.

The Lopezes’ destination included a pit stop for a chance to win a few extra dollars.

$1 billion, and nearly $600 million, according to the latest jackpot.

“So you made time to buy lottery tickets?” Petersen asked.

“Of course! You always make time for making money,” Cathy Lopez said.
