Atlanta-based Delta to resume middle seat booking, food and drink service on flights

ATLANTA — Your next Delta flight could start to feel normal again.

The Atlanta-based airline announced Wednesday that it would unblock the middle seats on flights starting May 1 and resume food and beverage service starting April 14.

CEO Ed Bastian said Delta is making the moves as it anticipates more people who flew Delta in 2019 before the pandemic will soon have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by May.

“While Delta’s decision to block middle seats has given many customers a reason to choose Delta over the past year, the signature hospitality of our employees and the experiences they deliver to customers every day have also deepened their trust in our airline,” Bastian said. ”We take great pride in the trust we’ve built with customers by listening and delivering on what they said was most important, and that is the approach you can continue to expect.”

Delta began blocking the middle seats and pausing the service in April 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Officials extended the policy several times. It’s the last major U.S. airline to resume booking middle seats.

The mask and cleaning policies implemented last year will remain in effect.

The airline also announced it is giving customers more time to rebook trips with a travel credit extension. Any ticket expiring or purchased in 2021 will now expire at the end of 2022.
