6 arrested in Conyers prostitution sting

CONYERS, Ga. — Conyers police made several arrests during an undercover prostitution sting. Investigators told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri they are targeting several more serious crimes related to prostitution.

Several men came to a hotel in the Conyers area after investigators posted an ad soliciting sex on the website Backpage.com. One man was so surprised to see officers he took off running before officers tackled him to the ground and placed him in handcuffs.

Another man asked police why he was under arrest, but investigators said he came to the hotel after responding to the ad.

Lt. Chris Moon with Conyers Police Criminal Investigation Division said officers want to crack down on prostitution because of the more dangerous crimes they often see stem from it.

"We've had to investigate armed robberies, rapes, aggravated assaults, sexual batteries, human trafficking, attempted kidnappings," Moon said.

Police arrested one man who had a warrant for his arrest for probation violation and another man who was carrying two bags of marijuana on him, but not enough cash.
"We're not sure what he thought he was going to do when he got here," Moon said.

Investigators took a total of six men to the Rockdale County jail and charged them with pandering and some with several other crimes.
