3 nonprofits in metro Atlanta get big financial boost from AmeriCorps

ATLANTA — Three nonprofit organizations in metro Atlanta are getting a big financial boost from AmeriCorps, a government agency engaging millions of Americans in acts of service.

Channel 2′s Bryan Mims visited one of those non-profits to discover how that money will go a long way.

The Dunbar neighborhood center houses the center for Black women’s wellness and it is receiving more than $78,000 from AmeriCorps.

United States representative Nikema Williams presented the check to the organization on Friday.

This is family service center is committed to improving the health of Black women and their families.

Two other organizations are receiving funds, including Covenant Community incorporated.

Covenant Community is residential program for men experiencing homelessness and addiction, AmeriCorps is providing it with more than $197,000.

AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith told Channel 2 Action News these funds will be critical to the mission of these non-profits.

“So the funds are going be used to actually place Americorps members at these nonprofit organizations. An AmeriCorps member isn’t a volunteer nor are they a permanent employee,” said Smith. “They’re going to give a year of service, two years of service, and they’re going do those things the nonprofits just struggle to get done with their small budgets.”

The third recipient of funds is the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Urban Educational Excellence at Georgia State University.

AmeriCorps is investing nearly $294,000 into the program.

AmeriCorps is an independent agency of the United States government that puts volunteers into various jobs, and many end up becoming employees of the places they serve.
