100+ students sickened amid norovirus outbreak in Gwinnett County

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Norovirus has struck a Snellville-area elementary school, causing more than 100 students to miss school Friday.

According to Gwinnett County Public Schools, 127 of the 600 students at W.C. Britt Elementary School were out Friday. Twenty-five of them checked out of school after becoming ill.

The school’s principal said teachers began noticing a problem on Thursday.

A letter went home with students, saying in part, “Based on the symptoms reported, the Health Department suspects the Norovirus as the cause of illness. Norovirus is easily spread person to person and can be spread through food.”

Secia Enriques told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas that she had to rush to her son’s school early.

“Yeah, the stomach. He’s saying that he is sick,” Enriques said.

Administrators say they’re trying to make sure it doesn’t spread any further. Workers are cleaning buses that run routes to and from the school. Classrooms are also being cleaned.

Officials hope that the three-day weekend will stop the virus from spreading any further.
