How To Tell If Your Toyota Camry Has Sudden Acceleration Pedal

None — Channel 2 Action News has learned that not all Toyota Camrys have the gas pedal suspected of causing sudden acceleration.

Channel 2 Action News consumer investigator Jim Strickland reports the problem pedal is known as the CTS pedal. It's made in Indiana.

The CTS pedal has a tell-tale silver plate on the side. (See photo)

Strickland said that Camry owners can check under the dash of their own cars to look for that plate.

The other gas pedal installed on some Camrys is called the Denso pedal. There is no silver plate on the Denso pedal. (See photo)

"No silver plate, no problem," said Strickland.

All the other Toyotas on the recall list have the CTS pedal, according to Strickland.

The maker of the CTS pedal said they have ramped up production at three factories to produce new pedals. The new pedals are meant to solve problems with condensation that Toyota has said can cause them to react slowly when driver presses on the gas or in rare cases, get stuck.

CTS says the new pedals will be meant to fix cars already owned by Toyota customers and for new cars Toyota is manufacturing.

Earlier this week, Toyota halted sales of eight models due to problems with the gas pedal system. That followed a recall last week of 2.3 million trucks and cars, including Camrys and Corollas.
