GEORGIA — As war continues to brew in Ukraine, American allies from Georgia have joined the offensive to send a message of “we have your backs,” Gen. Thomas Carden leader of the Georgia National Guard said.
Channel 2′s Mark Winne sat down with the general to learn more about their current efforts and how they are assisting Ukraine during these troubling times.
“There’s never been a more important time to reassure our allies and partners. We’re very honored to be able to contribute to the effort going on right now in Europe,” Carden said.

Currently, members of the Georgia National Guard are deployed in Europe and also in Germany to show solidarity.
Carden is familiar with Europe after living in Bucharest, Romania for 18 months where he served as deputy commander of NATO’S multi-national division. He also trained in Ukraine.

“I have been to Ukraine and I have trained with Ukrainians, and I am just so proud of what they’re doing right now to defend their homeland,” he said.

The country of Georgia has also been an instrumental ally, Carden told Winne, as the relationship between the state and country spans 27 years.
Across those years, both have served alongside one another, whether through training activities or defense forces in Iraq or Afghanistan.
“They’ve celebrated with us and they’ve bled with us, and so at a time when we need to reassure them we’re absolutely there, we’re engaged doing everything we can,” Carden said.
