Details of school fight find their way onto Twitter

ALPHARETTA, Ga.,None — Alpharetta High School's principal is assuring parents the school is safe after details about an on-campus fight made their way onto Twitter.

Fulton County School officials told Channel 2's Mike Petchenik the fight occurred last week in the school's gymnasium and involved two students attacking a third using a badminton racket.

Schools spokeswoman Susan Hale told Petchenik by email the student was taken to the hospital for stitches, and the two other students were charged with battery and suspended pending a tribunal hearing.

"I heard it was pretty bad, one of the bigger fights at Alpharetta," student Maddie McCormick said.

A witness to the fight took a picture of what appeared to be blood on the wall and posted it on Twitter.

"What's a day at Alpharetta without a fight," reads one Tweet posted Oct. 27.

Another reads: "It's not right without a fight... Alpharetta High School is now in the running for most ghetto."

After parents raised concerns about the fight and the tweets, Principal Shannon Kersey sent a letter home to parents.

"This particular altercation has received more attention because some students photographed the location of the incident with their cellphones and shared the images through social media," wrote Kersey. "I want to assure you that Alpharetta High School is a safe school, and that the level of student altercations we experience is minimal."

One student told Petchenik he appreciated the letter and felt the tweeters blew a small incident out of proportion.

"Make sure everyone's staying safe and keeps the school safe," said Jon Hager.
