DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County residents have been able to haul their garbage to the curb twice a week for decades, but the luxury may end soon.
Channel 2's Carol Sbarge has learned county officials may eliminate one trash collection day for residents or raise the fee.
Nicol Turner told Sbarge she counts on garbage collection every Tuesday and Friday in her neighborhood.
"That would be awful. We had a 7-year-old's birthday party this weekend, and I was looking at the garbage when I left, and it was overflowing," Turner said.
County residents currently pay an annual sanitation fee of $265. That includes two days of trash collection as well as crews picking up yard debris and recyclables on different days.
The county sanitation director told Sbarge the fee would have to go up $35 to continue that level of service.
Some residents said they're fine with losing a garbage day if it saves money.
"I think it's a good idea. There's times when I take my garbage out. I go to look and I'm ready to take it to the curb and there's nothing in there," resident David Ankenbrandt told Sbarge.
Dropping a trash day is just one idea officials said they are looking at as part of a study into trimming the county budget.
