Dalton carpet plant to close; 300 left jobless

DALTON, Ga.,None — A plant closure in northern Georgia means hundreds of people will lose their jobs.

On Monday, 270 people who work for Shaw Industries' Plant 20 in Dalton learned the facility will close.

Shaw Industries manufactures flooring and Plant 20 specializes in carpeting for homes.

Dalton's mayor told Channel 2 Action News the closure is a reflection of the struggling housing market.

"People have got to start building houses again in this country," David Pennington said.

Pennington said the closure could cost his city millions of dollars in lost utility revenue.

Shaw's director of human resources, William Scruggs, said he and his staff told everyone who works at the plant during one-on-one sessions.

Scruggs also said the company's leadership is committed to its workers and hopes to transfer many employees.

The company said it is working with the Georgia Department of Labor's Rapid Response Team to identify anyone else who wants more training for another career.

"We have some long, long service folks here and the decision to close the plant certainly had nothing to do with these folks," Scruggs said.

Plant 20 is expected to close within the next 60 days.
