Cobb, DeKalb voters to take up Sunday Sales on Super Tuesday

COBB COUNTY, Ga.,None — Voters in some metro Atlanta areas will finally get a chance to decide if they want to allow Sunday alcohol sales.

While voters in Atlanta, Marietta and Smyrna approved the measure last year, other places in unincorporated Cobb and DeKalb waited until the Super Tuesday primary to give their citizens a choice.

"Do I see a lot of sales coming from Sundays? Not so much," said Party Gras Boutique Liquor Store owner Dione Wilkins.

Her store is along the East West Connector in Austell. Right now, she can't open up on Sundays, and said she probably wouldn't anyway even if voters approve the measure.

"We think that (Sunday) sales will kind of draw into our Saturday sales and possibly our Monday sales," said Wilkins. "Plus, this is a family-owned business. So we think about the fact that we need to have some happy medium there between some time off and the time at work at the store."

Wilkins said she isn't sure yet how she'll vote on the issue.

Over at Smyrna Liquors, a long-time fixture along Spring Road, employee Dustin DeSautels has been allowed to sell liquor since Jan. 1. But he said, it really hasn't made much of a difference to their bottom line.

"Our first Sunday, we were pretty busy actually," said DeSautels. "But after that, it's just been a regular day. We see what we used to do in six days is spread out in seven now."

DeSautels worries that should voters in neighboring Mableton or Austell approve the measure, they may see the loss of some of their Sunday business.

"Our Sundays are doing good right now because people coming in from other counties keep our Sundays good," DeSautels said. "But if the other counties start selling? We'll see."

The vote is Tuesday.
