Atlanta Launches New Trash System

ATLANTA,None — Starting Monday, the city of Atlanta's new trash plan will go into effect. The new program, which focuses on one quadrant of the city at a time, is supposed to save money and improve service.

The new system is called 3n1 and will provide the core solid waste neighborhood services in one day. Crews will collect garbage, recycling and yard trimmings on the same day each week, depending on which quadrant.

“3n1 are your core solid waste neighborhood services in one day for our customer,” Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza told Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri.

Mendoza said the system will allow the department to use fewer trucks because routes will be more efficient. He credited a new software the city used with helping the department create more efficient routes.

"We recognized right away the way we had been doing business in the past was inefficient and hampering our ability to serve the customers. This is going to make that go a lot easier," Mendoza said.

With money saved in more efficient routes, the city will have set monthly bulk item pickups and bring back quarterly street sweeping.

"What this is going to enable us to do is increase our service level and reintroduce additional services at the same cost," Mendoza said.
