APS agrees to add bus stops after parent complaints

ATLANTA — Atlanta Public Schools announced Thursday night it is adding bus routes and stops after listening to parent input during the first week of school.

APS said it reviewed the current busing system, and decided to implement additional routes over the course of the next several weeks.

Forty-nine buses will be added to the district's fleet and 850 bus stops will be added to existing routes, along with crossing guards at dangerous intersections.

Parents still remained apprehensive about the improvements after the announcement.

"How is my child going to get to school and get to school safely?" parent Heather Coskysaid to Channel 2's Tony Thomas. Cosky said she didn't have much faith in the plan and is not happy with the time frame.

"It's been kind of weird not having the bus show up in the morning," her daughter, student Avalon Cosky, added.

The district said the additional bus stops will cost $2.8 million, and it will look for areas where funds can be redirected to cover the cost.

Parents have complained of crime, overgrown vegetation, abandoned buildings and stray animals as potential hazards for their children walking to school. APS said it will work with local agencies to address the issues.

Bus route updates will be posted to the APS website, as well as distributed via email, Twitter and letters home to parents.
