None — Fraud Hits Members With ATM & Check Cards (Update 6/10)
We want to keep you in the know about customers of financial institutions nationwide being targeted by thieves obtaining information about ATM and Check Cards. Visa USA is working diligently to learn how the information, which is being used to create duplicate ATM or Check Cards, is being obtained.
You may have heard of security breaches at major merchants over the past few years. Just recently Sony had a breach affecting millions of users. BJ's Wholesale Club was another large breach. In such breaches, thieves obtain the information of customers who shop in those stores. The personal card information is most often obtained by hackers accessing the systems of companies who process the card transactions for the merchants. By obtaining information from such large merchants' and processors' data bases, thieves are able to literally obtain information on thousands of consumers nationwide who use ATM or Check Cards from hundreds of financial institutions.
Some members have reported unauthorized withdrawals or transactions on their Checking Accounts with Associated CU.
The thieves create cards they can use to access an account. To help prevent losses, ATM cash withdrawals are temporarily limited to two per day, for a maximum of $400. If you should need larger amounts to meet your needs, please let us know.
A quick way to let us know your needs is to use Secure Support, our secure e-mail in Online Banking. Just e-mail us your request and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Otherwise, please call us at 770.448.8200, Ext. 2401. We apologize if the lines are busy, but we assure you we'll answer your call as fast as we can.
We also want you to be aware that to help protect accounts from fraudulent transactions, we have a Fraud Monitoring service. If it detects a suspicious transaction being made, a representative will call you to verify the transaction. The telephone number that will appear as the caller from our fraud service is 1.866.890.7787. To make certain you get such important calls, make sure we have the best phone number to reach you.
We regret the actions we must take to help prevent further fraud on accounts. We'll keep you posted and hope that Visa is able to quickly resolve the issue affecting consumers nationwide.
