3-Year-Old Killed In Alcohol-Suspected Crash

DACULA, Ga. — Police suspect alcohol was involved in a Monday night crash in Gwinnett County that left a 3-year-old girl dead.

Jayla Cook of Grayson died at the scene after a Toyota Highlander went off Braselton Highway near Old Fountain Road in Dacula, hit a tree and a fire hydrant and then burst into flames.

Witnesses pulled the driver, Alicia Tubman, 26, from the vehicle, but were unable to rescue the 3-year-old because of the fire.

"They were able to get her out to safety at which point they noticed a small child in the rear seat and unfortunately, the flames had grown too big and they were unable to get to the child," said David Schiralli of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Paramedics took Tubman to Grady Memorial Hospital with burn injuries. She is listed in stable condition.

Officials are investigating whether Tubman had been drinking.

"During the investigation, there was some sort of indications that alcohol may have been involved. At this time, we're awaiting toxicology results," Schiralli said.
