DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb police are investigating a shooting involving a Redan High School resource officer, police said.
The shooting happened after school shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday in Stone Mountain, police said.
A representative for DeKalb County Schools said the resource officer noticed a fight on nearby Fieldgreen Drive and went to intervene.
When the officer tried to intervene, a student pointed a gun at the resource officer, at which point the officer fired his weapon, the school system said. The 16-year-old student victim does not attend Redan High School. He is a student at DeKalb Alternative High School, the school system said.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young arrived at the scene and began getting witness accounts. According to Young, kids at a nearby day care had to run for cover.
Police spokesman Jason Gagnon confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that one person was shot in the arm. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was last said to be in stable condition.
