Oscars on 2: Atlanta-filmed ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ up for 5 Academy Awards

The 95th Academy Awards will air LIVE this Sunday on Channel 2. And of course, what’s Hollywood’s biggest night without connections to Atlanta’s film industry?

Atlanta will be well-represented by Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the sequel to 2018′s breakout hit “Black Panther.” The film shot on location in Atlanta from 2021 to 2022 at Trilith Studios and Tyler Perry Studios.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is up for five Oscars on Sunday night: Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Makeup and Hair Styling, and Best Visual Effects.

The first film previously won for Best Costume, Best Original Score and Best Production Design. Will the sequel win big on Sunday?

MORE OSCARS ON 2:

The film’s best chances are in the hands of Angela Bassett and Ruth E. Carter.

Bassett received widespread acclaim for the performance of Ramonda, Wakanda’s queen and the mother of T’Challa and Shuri. Bassett and the rest of the cast pulled their raw emotions from the loss of Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 after a battle with cancer.

So far, Bassett has won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Award; however, Best Supporting Actress is considered one of the most competitive categories. Jamie Lee Curtis (”Everything, Everywhere All at Once”) won the Screen Actors Guild Award and Kerry Condon (”The Banshees of Inisherin”) won the BAFTA award.

If Bassett can’t win for Best Supporting, the next best odds lie in Best Costume for “Wakanda Forever.” Ruth E. Carter returned as the costume designer for the film.

Carter became the first African-American to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 2018 for her work on “Black Panther.” Carter said she had hoped her Oscar win would open up the doors for others.

But will she follow her own footsteps with another gold statue?

Carter has already won two Best Costume Design awards on the circuit this year. Her biggest competition for the Oscar: Catherine Martin’s costumes for “Elvis.” Martin has also won two awards this season.
