Powder Springs, GA – U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Makisha Stiles now has the keys to a mortgage-free home.
Stiles served for more than 13 years in the United States Army and the Army Reserve and was ordered to active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2011, doctors diagnosed Stiles with breast cancer.
The national nonprofit Building Homes for Heroes has given her a new home.
Stiles says the gift offers her a sense of belonging.
“Some people who aren’t in the military don’t really understand what veterans go through, especially when you get out,” she said. “Now that we have these programs, you feel appreciated again.”
Watch People 2 People Saturdays at 5:30 a.m. and Sundays at 12:30 p.m.
Now in remission, Stiles is excited about starting family traditions in her new home. Building Homes for Heroes renovates and donates homes for wounded veterans and their families across the nation.
