Falcons go back to black with new uniforms for 1st time in 17 years

It’s been 17 years since the Atlanta Falcons played with new uniform designs. That changed on Wednesday when the team unveiled its new look.

The Falcons originally planned to reveal the uniforms on April 14 but released them a week early. Fans will be able to purchase gear online April 14.

Overall, there are eight color combinations:

  • four jerseys (black home, white away, gradient alternate and the ’66 throwbacks)
  • four pants (black, white, red and throwbacks)
  • one helmet (black).

The Falcons had been working with Nike on the designs for the past two seasons, receiving fan and player feedback during the process.

“As you know, part of promise as an organization is to listen and respond. It’s at the very core of who we are. Time and again, we’ve heard you ask for new uniforms over the years, and in the spirit of our core values, we’ve listened to you and responded with what I know will be an exciting new era of Falcons football,” team owner Arthur Blank said in a letter to the fans.

Atlanta will wear the black jerseys with black pants at home games while wearing white jerseys with white pants on the road.

The red jerseys the Falcons have sported over the years and the 1966 throwbacks will serve as alternates. The return to black uniforms has been a popular fan request over the years.

“I think these new uniforms will give us, give the city a new energy and I think people are going to really be excited about it,” defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said. “We know this is a tough time for everyone right now, but we hope this can bring some excitement and light to our city and our fans. Around the whole world everybody knows what ATL stands for, so we’re proud to represent that, today and every day.”

“There’s just a feeling to it. I can’t explain it when you look in your locker and that color and head to toe in black is going to be good, too,” quarterback Matt Ryan said. “I don’t know what it is, but I know there’s a feeling that comes with it for the guys, too, when we see that in our lockers.”
