EAST POINT, Ga. — An East Point family demanding help from the city for a drainage problem said rainy weather is washing away their yard.
The Edwards family told Channel 2's Linda Stouffer that rushing water behind their Wood Hill Lane home used to be a small stream, now its carving up their property.
Myrna Edwards showed Stouffer how the stream eroded nearly 10 feet of her property line, and Edwards said her home has flooded several times.
"I know it's going to rise. I've already started moving items in my lower area off the floor," said Edwards as rain fell outside.
Several years ago, the city installed pipes under the street, and water now runs off in her direction even more, according to Edwards.
"It's not fair. It's not fair. I am very upset. We are very upset because they are just not doing anything," Edwards said.
Stouffer called the East Point city attorney and city manager. A few hours later, Alex Mohajer, the head of public works, arrived.
Mohajer told Stouffer and a group of neighbors that the run-off is out of the city's hands because it is on private property.
"What we advised them to do is go ahead and hire a contractor. They can give us a plan to stabilize the stream and well expedite the permitting, but that's the best we can do. We cannot go on private property to do work," said Mohajer.
"Storm drains which are on city property on city easement which is flowing on to private property," responded Edwards. "I'm bearing the brunt of everybody's storm water."
Edwards planned to keep writing council members. She told Stouffer she wants the storm water piped away from her back yard.
