COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A local woman is fighting to get her basement fixed after it filled with sewage. She said Cobb County cleaned up the mess, but what they left behind has left her upset.
Officials with the Cobb County Water System said they did their part to clean up the sewage leak at Betty Simpson's home in Kennesaw -- and she agrees. But where she parts ways with the county concerns what will happen to put her basement back together again.
"I got up and I smelled the odor in my kitchen," said Simpson.
In October, Simpson said she woke up to an awful smell in her home. Then she discovered a flood in her basement.
"It was real bad. I had on my bedroom shoes and it just soaked my bedroom shoes," said Simpson.
A back up in the county-owned sewer line caused raw sewage to flood her basement. The county cleaned up the mess and detoxed the rooms, but left behind ripped carpet and tile, damaged paneling and flooded furniture, Simpson said.
"My furniture and everything needs to be replaced. My TV won't even play again," said Simpson.
Simpson said she got an estimate for repairing her basement for $10,000, but the county offered less.
"And he said, ‘You know, I'll give you ($6,000.)' And I said no," said Simpson.
Cobb County representative Robert Quigley confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that the county did offer Simpson $6,000, and said that if she thought she deserved more she would have to give a good reason why and show proof.
"I don't think they're doing me right," said Simpson.
Quigley said if county officials and Simpson cannot come to an agreement, she can sue the county.
Simpson said she would sue if she had to.
