The owners spoke with employees Saturday about relocations.
Restaurant owners and the city got into a dispute over rezoning issues.
On the restaurant's website, the company said it set out to come up with smaller designs for the newer Varsities, including drive-through windows, all new landscaping and paving and an indoor children's play area. But after submitting their plans to the city of Atlanta for approval, the city started placing more and more restrictions on the plans, the company said. "The plans were completed. We were ready to begin a process of reconstruction with the goal of reopening within 120 days," the company said on its website.
"This has been one of the hardest decisions the Varsity family has had to make in our 82 years of operation," the company said.
The diner has been open for 45 years and has five locations.
