ATLANTA,None — Troops returning from and deploying to the Middle East were treated to a Thanksgiving feast at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
The USO and area chefs sponsored the meal.
Volunteers began serving meals after a flight from Kuwait arrived at 11 a.m. Thursday. The soldiers on board had been on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Organizers expected to feed a couple hundred soldiers and their loved ones in the USO facilities.
In preparation, the chefs made 100 pounds of turkey, 40 pounds of pork, 40 pounds of green beans and 50 pounds of dressing.
"This is their home for thanksgiving," said Mary Lou Austin, the director of the Atlanta USO.
One soldier told Channel 2's Erica Byfield he was surprised to learn he was being deployed on Thanksgiving.
"It's just different leaving on the day of, but it's one of those things you have to deal with being a solider, so it's really not that bad," Sgt. Warren Jones said.
