UGA's Evans, Female Companion Exchanged Texts, Records Show

ATLANTA — Former UGA athletic director Damon Evans was communicating with a female companion weeks before their arrest that led to Evans' resignation.

E-mails and phone records obtained by Channel 2 Action News show Courtney Fuhrmann, 28, also met with Evans more than a month before his drunken driving arrest in Buckhead.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Regan spent the day digging through those records, and based on the most recent phone records, Evans and Fuhrmann texted each other on three separate occasions weeks before Evans was arrested while in her company.

The embarrassing details of that episode prompted Evans' resignation, just as he started a lucrative five-year contract at UGA.

During a news conference following his arrest, Evans described Fuhrmann as "a friend." She was with Evans in his vehicle on the night of July 2, when Evans was pulled over by a state trooper.

Fuhrmann, who was arrested for disorderly conduct told the trooper that night that she and Evans had met just a week earlier. But records obtained from the University of Georgia suggest otherwise. While looking through e-mails, phone and text communications, Regan examined an e-mail sent to Evans from Fuhrmann on May 21.

The e-mail stated: "Wanted to thank you all again for last night. We had a great time and it's always refreshing meeting what is the phrase of the night "good people." Look us up next time you are in town if you like. Take care and look forward to a great football season. Courtney Fuhrmann."

Regan also checked Damon Evans' phone records for the month from May 7 to June 6, the most recent date available.

Regan counted 15 text messages between Evans and Fuhrmann. Regan tried to find out what was in the text messages, but that information was not available.

Also included in the e-mails were many messages of support for Evans and praise for his achievements during his years at the University of Georgia.
