A San Diego man pleaded guilty to driving to Texas and fatally stabbing his boyfriend 93 times, prosecutors said Tuesday.
According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas, Alexander Yoichi Duberek, 25, pleaded guilty to a charge of interstate domestic violence resulting in death.
Duberek faces a maximum term of life in prison when he is sentenced.

Federal court documents did not name the victim, but the Plainview Herald and Lubbock Avalance-Journal identified him as Chad Luera, 30.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Duberek flew from San Diego to Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport on Oct. 30, 2020. He then took an Uber to a Sam’s Club, where he paid $3,000 cash for a 2009 Toyota Camry, prosecutors said. Duberek then allegedly bought several items at a Walmart, including a knife, gas can, collapsible shovel and hatchet, court documents show.
Duberek also bought a headlamp, change of clothing, boots, personal hygiene items and a first aid kit, KSWB-TV reported.
Location data investigators obtained from Duberek’s Google account showed he reached Luera’s residence in Hale Center about 10:09 p.m. CDT, according to the Avalanche-Journal. The account did not show additional movement until about 11:17 p.m., when it indicated that Duberek was about four miles north of where Luera’s body was found on a road.
Duberek then fled to Houston, where he sold the Camry outside an auto auction, according to the Union-Tribune.
Luera’s body was found the next morning, KCBD-TV reported.
An autopsy showed Luera was stabbed 93 times, according to court documents.
On March 18, 2021, Duberek surrendered to the FBI in San Diego and was arrested on a warrant issued by Hale County authorities, the Avalanche-Journal reported. He was indicted in federal court six months later, the Union-Tribune reported.
“This defendant plotted the murder of an innocent young man, methodically purchasing equipment, locating a stretch of desolate road, and stabbing the victim nearly eight dozen times,” prosecutor Chad E. Meacham said in a statement. “Not every brutal domestic homicide falls within federal jurisdiction, but when it does, we are determined to use whatever tools we have to bring the perpetrator to justice. Mr. Duberek now faces the possibility of a life behind bars pondering his evil act.”
