In documents filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, Hyundai said that in the event of a crash, the pretensioners in the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belts may explode. Pretensioners tighten seatbelts in preparation for a crash, The Associated Press reported.

The recall includes 61,000 2019-2022 Accents, 166,000 2021-2023 Elantras and 12,000 2021-2022 Elantra HEV vehicles, according to documents filed with NHTSA.

The recall expands and replaces three previous recalls, and vehicles repaired under previous recalls will need to be brought back to dealerships again for a new repair, the AP reported.
