Khaleen Brown Anderson told WABC that she had just pulled into the driveway of their home on Monday afternoon and was taking her daughter, Abbey, out of a car seat, when she saw the dog running up the street.

“I flipped her on the car and I run around the car,” Brown Anderson said. “That thing started chasing me. I had to jump through my driver’s side. It came through my car. There was nothing more I could do besides calling for help.”

Teaneck Deputy Police Chief Andrew McGurr told NJ.com that a contractor who was working nearby heard the mother’s screams and was able to chase the dog away.

The contractor, Michael Policastro, told NorthJersey.com that he initially saw someone yell for the dogs to come back, but the owner was nowhere to be found.

“The mother tried to get back in the car, but the girl was bit on the neck and face,” Policastro said. “I never saw so much blood.”

Policastro said he kicked the dog to try to distract it.

“It gave a yelp and turned to face me,” Policastro told NorthJersey.com. “But I yelled at it, and it ran away.”

Brown Anderson and her 4-year-old daughter were taken to a hospital for treatment and released. Brown Anderson told WABC that her daughter is traumatized and continues to cry in her sleep.

Police said this is the second time the pit bull has attacked a human. McGurr told NJ.com that a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service reported being attacked by a brown-haired pit bull and another dog in December 2017 when he delivered mail to an address on the block. The mail carrier was treated at a hospital for his injuries.

Police issued two summonses to the dog’s owner, identified as Jason Evans.

“We let the dog out to use the bathroom, and she must’ve hit the lock,” Evans told WABC. “All I hope is we get the dog back and we are all going to take better precautions, like put a padlock on the gate now, and other things that will keep her inside.”

Evans told WABC that in 2017, the dog attacked after the postal worker opened the screen door, letting the animal out.

The dog was impounded by Bergen County Animal Control, pending a court hearing, according to NorthJersey.com.
