A student at a Kentucky university found himself on an unusual adventure Tuesday night when a raccoon hanging around his campus stole his phone and ran off.
Guy Williams, 19, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, posted the adventure on Twitter and it has made headlines on media websites from Buzzfeed News to Time.com. Williams explained that he and some friends spotted the raccoon, which is often spotted on the Bellarmine University campus in Louisville, and decided to feed it acorns and snap some pictures.
Williams, who minutes before had named the raccoon Stanley, went a step further and put his phone, with camera recording, on the ground to get some footage of his new friend eating his treats. Stanley, who apparently was having none of it, grabbed the phone in his teeth and ran.

The ensuing pursuit was captured in hilarious detail. Stanley eventually dropped the phone when it rang and Williams was able to follow the sound to locate the missing device.

The video went viral, attracting media attention and making Stanley an unlikely hero. Even Bellarmine University was in on the action, tweeting about Williams’ adventure and calling the raccoon an “instant campus legend.”

Stanley’s fans shouldn’t worry, though. He and Williams have made up since the cell phone theft.
