Soldier gives family a surprise homecoming at Braves game

ATLANTA — There was an unforgettable surprise for the wife and four children of an Air Force Sergeant this Memorial Day.

After six months deployed in Afghanistan, Master Sgt. David Sims, of Warner Robbins, was on a top-secret mission at Turner Field Monday.

While he watched the Braves game from above the home dugout, his wife and four kids watched from somewhere down the third-base line.

"They were expecting me later, next week or maybe the week after that. They were not expecting me this soon. I've got them convinced I was extended for quite a while," Sgt. Sims told Channel 2's Jeff Dore.

Even though rule No. 1 for marriage is don't shock your wife in front of 40,000 people, he did it.

The Sims family was invited to come onto the field to represent all the families waiting for loved ones abroad

Surprise No. 1, Sgt. Sims had a special video Message that played up on the Jumbotron. Then surprise No. 2 came.

"I can't wait to be with you again. In fact, wait one minute," Sims said in the message.

And that's when he ran out of the dugout and onto the field, running into the arms of his shocked family.

Sims wife gave him a kiss as his four children surrounded them in a massive group hug.

Sims’ children said they couldn’t believe their dad was home.

“It was very surprising. I was like ‘no way,’” son Dustin Sims said.

“I almost had a heart attack,” Roman Sims said.

As for Sgt. Sims’ wife…

“Well, she did punch me in the chest,” he said, but clearly she forgave him.
