Power Outage Leaves 1,400 Without Heat Overnight

LITHONIA, Ga. — Residents across Rockdale and DeKalb counties braved chilly temperatures inside their homes after a power outage on Wednesday night.

Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh was with utility crews as they worked in the freezing cold to get the power and the heat back on for customers.

The overnight outage affected more than 1,400 customers from Lithonia to Conyers.

One resident said he was awoken at 1 a.m. when his space heater turned off.

"We go outside and nobody has street lights. There's no power on down here," resident Caymen Ross said.

Temperatures were in the low twenties on Thursday morning as linemen with Snapping Shoals EMC worked to restore power. They spent nearly four hours making repairs.

Crews said the problem may have been caused by animals that got into the power lines.
