DeKalb County dispels rumors, says only 200 votes needed to be ‘cured’

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — People in DeKalb County whose ballots were rejected are getting calls and letters telling them they need to resolve discrepancies right away for their vote to count.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones was at election headquarters on Memorial Drive, where he learned more about the process, which is known as “curing” the ballot.

About 200 ballots were flagged for reasons like not having a signature or the voter needing to show a valid form of identification.

The elections office sent out overnight mailings or called people, telling them they need to clear it all up.

Jones talked to one voter, who wondered why her ballot was flagged so close to the election.

Rose Eskridge said her ballot was initially accepted on Sept. 29. On Thursday, she was at election headquarters trying to figure out why the office flagged her absentee ballot, which needed to be cured.

Channel 2 Action News will have live streaming election coverage starting at 7 p.m. as results come in. Download the WSB Now app on your Roku, Amazon Fire or Apple TV to watch LIVE.

Eskridge said the letter came Wednesday and she needs to show her I.D., even though she said her ballot was accepted in September.

“This is very important, very important,” Eskridge said. “I’m highly upset.”

Eskridge was particularly upset that the request came so late.

“Four days before the election to tell me something was wrong with mine, my ballot,” Eskridge said.

After visiting the elections office, Eskridge learned her ballot was rejected because of a clerical error.

“The person wasn’t able to understand my writing,” Eskridge said. She said the issue was quickly resolved and her ballot was accepted.

Another voter Jones talked to said she got a letter saying she didn’t sign her ballot and that she needed to follow up and correct it.

The county said it is working to count each and every vote.

County officials also wanted to correct information on social media that 40,000 ballots had been rejected and needed to be cured.

By law, voters who receive the letter or get a call have three days from the time they are informed to correct their ballots.
