Police: Textbook Thieves Pulled Gun On Clerk

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.,None — When a clerk at a local bookstore refused to buy stolen textbooks, Lawrenceville police said the thieves pulled out a gun.

Now, the owners of Dorks Textbooks in Lawrenceville said they won’t reopen until the gunmen are behind bars.

Last month, Channel 2 first reported about a ring of thieves stealing textbooks from college campus libraries in Gwinnett County and trying to sell them.

On Monday, Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh pulled arrest warrants for two suspects, 26-year-old Chaz Ivery and 26-year-old David Moseley, both of Lawrenceville, who police believe are part of the ring.

Brad Faulkner, co-owner of Dorks Textbooks, said his store employees realized the same group of people were trying to sell them books that appeared to be stolen.

“The ones that were stolen, we realized there was sticker residue. One of the books left the sticker on it,” Faulkner said.

Faulkner said the sticker read Gwinnett Technical College and he knew the book was stolen.

Police said Ivery and Moseley were part of the ring stealing textbooks from at least two college campus libraries, Gwinnett Tech and Georgia Gwinnett College, and selling them for cash.

As Kavanaugh first reported last month, when the employees realized what was going on, they stopped buying the stolen books, spoiling a lucrative scheme.

"We obviously cut these guys off. We weren't giving them anymore. It makes sense these guys may rob us," Faulkner said. “We felt like sitting ducks for a few days.”

According to warrants obtained by Channel 2, that's exactly what happened.

Police said Moseley tried to sell books at the Lawrenceville store on July 8. The clerk refused to buy to them.

"Within a minute, another guy came in with a gun screaming at the top of his lungs,” Faulkner said.

The warrant said Ivery came in with the gun, demanded money and said, 'Don’t call the cops.'

Faulkner said he knew both men were heading to his Oakwood location next when both of their names and numbers showed up on the store’s caller ID when they called for store hours on Friday.

"I knew exactly who it was when they were calling,” Faulkner said.

Faulkner called police. Oakwood police said they arrested Moseley on charges of selling stolen books. There is a warrant for his arrest in Gwinnett County for armed robbery.

Police are still searching for Ivery. He’s also accused of armed robbery in Gwinnett County.

If you have any information on Ivery's whereabouts, please call the Lawrenceville police at 770-963-2443.
