BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A mobile meth lab was discovered after a police chase early Friday, deputies said.
The incident began when a deputy spotted an Oldsmobile Alero speeding down Hwy 211, Barrow County sheriff's Inv. Matt Guthas said. He said the deputy tried to stop the car, but it fled onto Mulberry Road.
The Oldsmobile led the deputy on high-speed chase until it wrecked after a short while, Guthas said. The driver, 42-year-old Kenneth Pierce, was ejected from the car, but a passenger, Tammy Partin, 33, remained inside, Guthas said. He said both were not wearing seat belts.
Both suspects were taken to an area hospital to receive emergency treatment, but neither of their conditions is life-threatening, Guthas said.
When deputies searched the car, they found an "active meth lab" in the trunk, Guthas said.
"When they moved the vehicle over, rotating on its four tires, to tow it. That's when they located the items in the truck," Guthas told Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh.
Deputies also found methamphetamine, marijuana, a pistol and two rifles, Guthas said. He said Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents removed the lab's hazardous materials.
Pierce was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession and manufacture of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, fleeing and attempting to elude, driving with a suspended license, speeding, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. Partin was charged with marijuana possession and possession and manufacture of methamphetamine.
