Nine Days Of 90-Degree Heat, More Expected

ATLANTA,None — The sizzling start to June continued on Monday with a ninth-straight day of temperatures climbing above 90 degrees in metro Atlanta.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist David Chandley said the sweltering June heat is well above the 85 degree average for the first week of June.

"A huge area of high pressure at the surface and aloft has parked itself in the mid-south," Chandley said.

"The air around a high-pressure system moves in a clockwise fashion, so the real rich, humid air is being pushed to our west and driven northward. We have been on the front side of the high, so our air has been drier."

The forecast high for Monday was 93 degrees, according to Chandley. The record high for June 6 in Atlanta is 100 degrees set in 1943.

Temperatures will remain in the low 90s through the end of the week and chances of rain are slim, Chandley said.

"Even with the heating of the day, we bubble up just a few late-day thunderstorms, but most areas will remain rain free. I think we have another seven days of this pattern before a change will take place. Even though it's been hot and dry now, there is no reason to think this will last the rest of the summer. With an active tropical season on the horizon, our summer weather could be very active," Chandley added.
